Stress-Less Holiday Season

The holiday season is quickly approaching. For many, the holiday season is less than joyous. In an attempt to create the perfect holiday they fill their days with tasks, diminish their sleep hours, and overwhelm their financial budgets.
Here are some stress-less holiday tips for those of you who would like to have a more fulfilling season. While it may not suit you to do all the things listed, take the time to find one to three changes you can make to have the holiday you're dreaming of.
Take time for yourself - Too often people get wrapped up in the “have to's” of the season and themselves. Many end up sick for the holiday. Lack of sleep and being overly busy create irritability so that it is hard to truly enjoy the time spent with each other. If you take time for yourself, i.e. take a bubble bath, go for a walk, ride your bike, read a book, meditate, or write in your journal, you will actually be able to receive the gifts the season has to offer.
Create a relaxing atmosphere - Each evening light some candles, put on relaxing music or enjoy dinner using your china. Make each evening special. After all, life isn't a goal, it's a process.
Allow yourself plenty of time for errands – A lot of people are out shopping and running errands so lines are longer and driving is slower with the added traffic. Allow an extra hour when shopping or running errands to reduce your stress.
Get help: Since there is more to do around the holidays get help with the extras. You can lighten your workload if you hire house cleaners, ask your guests to join you in the kitchen, or contribute to the dinner (people love to share their favorites).
Begin a new tradition - People often stick with traditions that no longer fit their lifestyle. Make the holidays yours, i.e., go on a hike before dinner, learn a new game, try a new dish… a tradition that serves you and your lifestyle.
Remember the purpose of the holidays and order your priorities - How would you describe your reason for celebrating the season? What are your best memories? What are the three most important things to accomplish to create a holiday of purpose? If what you are doing is not fun, don't do it.
Give yourself credit - Find something everyday that you've done well. If you credit yourself on the positives than you will feel more successful moving into the holidays.
Sleep - The average American gets only a portion of the sleep the body actually requires to rejuvenate itself. Sleep = greater effectiveness = less time wasted = less irritability = happier holidays.
Simplify – Suggest gift exchanges rather than a gift for everyone. Try cookie exchanges so that you bake only one batch and still get a variety. Pick one favorite food item for each family member and simplify!
Self-Hypnosis- Allow yourself a few minutes each day to relax and go deeply within. Try the following relaxation exercise to reclaim the holidays as your own.

Snow Globe Relaxation
Find a nice, comfortable chair, couch, or pillow to relax on. Close your eyes and breath deeply and slowly for three breaths. Imagine a snow globe of your holiday whirl. See the snow tumbling frantically in the globe and watch as it begins to slow down. Watch the snow as it lands, safely, securely on the various parts of your scene. Keep watching as the amount of whirling snow lessons until the scene is perfectly calm and still. Now, look around. Begin to see the beauty of the scene. Feel the stillness. Allow that beauty and stillness to become a part of you. You know that you have the ability to stop shaking the globe at any time. You have the ability to bring this beauty and calm into your life. Take the next five to 10 minutes to enjoy the quiet… When you are ready, begin to notice your body, start moving around, wiggle your fingers and toes, open your eyes, and realize this new world you have created.
This time away is a form of self-hypnosis. It is calming and relaxing because it accesses the subconscious where your emotions and belief systems lie. In times of stress or extreme activity, we need the time to access our inner selves and allow inner peace. Simply eliminating outside stimulation is a major source of relaxation. Closing your eyes alone reduces the outside stimulation by 80 percent. Taking the time to recreate the scene and change it, allows the conscious mind to rest and the subconscious mind to actively create the holiday you are looking forward to.
Oil of the Month
with Nicola McGill

This month I am choosing a blend of Essential Oils using those, which are reminiscent of the Holidays
My blend consists of Frankincense, Orange and Cinnamon – such wonderful aromatic fragrances that remind us of a season of Joy, Happiness, Love of friends and Family and above all, love of ourselves. This blend is perfect to use when the stress of the holiday season takes over and we need to stop and enjoy!!
Frankincense ( Boswellia carteri ) - also known as Olibanum, was one of the first gums to be used as incense over 5,000 years ago. The Egyptians used it not for embalming purposes but for their rejuvenating skin masks. The essential oil is a clear yellow or greenish liquid with a warm sweet balsamic scent. It is Yang oil in nature.
Properties
- Anti- inflammatory, Antiseptic, Antidepressant, Cicatrizing, Sedative
Uses
- Skin Care –Blemishes, mature wrinkled skin, scars
- Respiratory System – Asthma, Bronchitis, Laryngitis
- Immune System –Cold and Flu
- Mind and Spirit – excellent oil for meditation as it can slow down breathing producing a feeling of calmness
Orange Sweet (Citrus sinensis) – The essential oil is extracted from the peel of the fruit - is yellowy orange in color and has a fresh fruity scent. It was used as a symbol of fertility.
Properties
- Antidepressant, digestive stimulant and tonic, fungicidal and carminative
Uses
- Skin Care – Dull oily Complexions
- Digestive System – Spasms, Constipation
- Mind and Spirit – a bright cheery oil that can spread a little sunshine into your day – perfect when lacking energy
Cinnamon Leaf ( cinnamomum zeylancium) – The oil is distilled from the leaves of the exotic rust colored tree, which is native to Indonesia. The Chinese used the oil as a liver tonic, the Greeks valued its stomachic and antiseptic properties and in Europe it was given as a sedative to mothers in labor.
Properties
- Antiseptic, anesthetic, antispasmodic, stimulant, parasiticide, digestive tonic
Uses
- Skin Care - tooth and gum care, wasp stings
- Muscular System – poor circulation, rheumatism
- Digestive System – colitis, spasm, sluggish digestion
- Immune System – chills, colds, flu
- Mind and Spirit – Perfect oil to inhale during times of exhaustion, weakness and depression
CAUTION – Cinnamon Leaf should not be confused with Cinnamon Bark – The oil from Cinnamon Bark is a dermal toxin, an irritant to the skin and mucous membranes – DO NOT USE ON SKIN. Cinnamon leaf is non-toxic but should still be used with caution and it can also be a dermal irritant.
If you have any questions regarding this blend or any other Essential Oils, please feel free to contact me at the Whole Health Wellness Center, or by email to aroma@nicolamcgill.com
Enjoy!!!

A Letter from Deborah Fleming Dear Clients:
It is with great enthusiasm to let you know that I am returning to practice December 3 rd . As you may have been aware, I made a decision about 2 years ago, to leave practice in order to develop the center. It has been a wonderful experience being apart of the center's expansion, and yet I must admit that I am most fulfilled working one-on-one with clients. My work will be focusing on overcoming anxiety & depression, self-empowerment, creating the life you desire, manifesting prosperity and smoking cessation.
In addition, I will be hosting a variety of workshops, discussion groups and seminars throughout the year (which you will notice in the Events section of the newsletter and website). You can also look forward to an article or wellness activity in each newsletter.
If you have any questions, or would like to schedule an appointment, feel free to contact me at 303-444-3833.
